ceremony in Austin on October 27th marked the official
beginning of the No Silence, No Shame project. Over the coming months
and years, we will
continue reaching
out to families of the executed throughout the United States.
conduct interviews and create a
document that will educate lawmakers, victims advocates, the death
penalty abolition community, and the general public about the effects of
the death penalty on surviving family members
develop a network for putting
families in touch with one another
help families of the executed
prepare to speak out publicly against the death penalty, and help arrange
speaking opportunities
educate the faith community
about the need for counseling and support of families of the executed
within their congregations
educate child welfare
professionals and advocates, raising the issue of the impact of executions
upon surviving children
engage in dialogue with mental
health practitioners and researchers, exploring the impact that executions
have on the mental health of surviving family members and the short- and
long-term social costs of executions
